Nuclear bomb B61-12
In 2020, the US plans to release the first sample of the upgraded nuclear bombs B61-12. This was announced by the National office for nuclear safety
The national nuclear safety administration (NNSA) has officially sanctioned the beginning of a technological preparation of production of the modernized B61 nuclear bombs of the 12th modification. This is the official website of the Department.
Production of the first sample of the B61-12 is scheduled for 2020, then the US will begin full production of bombs in the new version.
According to the head of NNSA Frank Klitza, at this point in the modification of a bomb installed “old components” that exist in the U.S. Arsenal, but thanks to the modernization of the bomb in the 12th modification will last for at least another 20 years.
Testing of the B61-12 took place in November 2015 and was deemed successful. Bomb without charge was dropped from a fighter F15E on the ground in Nevada. Another test of the upgraded bombs was held last summer.
Upgraded nuclear bomb B61-12 should be used instead of nuclear bombs B61 series: B61-3, -4, -7, -10, which now stand at US army.
The B61 was developed in 1963. Its development was carried out over two years. She was later put into serial production, is constantly subjected to modifications. Length of the bomb is approximately 3.58 metres, a diameter of about 33 cm, weight from 320 to 500 kg. the Exact data depend on the modification and equipping of bombs. A nuclear warhead that could carry a bomb, reached capacity from 0.3 to over 300 kilotons.
